How Many Days Do You Need for a Masai Mara Safari?

If you are weighing how many days in Masai Mara safari time to book, three days and two nights is the shortest trip with a full day of game drives. A day trip from Nairobi runs 12 or 13 hours, and 4 or 6 days add Lake Nakuru and Amboseli. Every Masai Mara safari here starts in Nairobi.

Quick answer The short answer on trip length

Book 3 days and 2 nights for a first Masai Mara safari: an evening game drive on day 1 and a full day in the reserve on day 2. A 13-hour day trip works only when no night is free. Add a fourth day for Lake Nakuru, or six days for Amboseli too.

Key takeaways

How Many Days Are Ideal for Masai Mara?

Three days and two nights is the practical minimum, and longer trips suit migration seekers or a second park.

Day 1 and the last day are mostly road time from Nairobi, so count game drives, not calendar days.

What Each Trip Length Gives You

The table below compares the safari lengths sold from Nairobi by the game drives each listing describes. Prices and full itineraries sit on each tour card.

Why Three Days Is the Floor

A 2-day trip loses the full day 2, and a day trip loses the night too. Each day in the reserve also carries a Mara Conservancy fee of $100 per adult from 1 January to 30 June or $200 from 1 July to 31 December.

Is a 1-Day Masai Mara Safari From Nairobi Enough?

A day trip shows you the reserve but gives only a few hours of game viewing.

The day trips leave Nairobi and return the same evening, with the park fee on top of the tour price.

What a 13-Hour Day Looks Like

The Maasai Mara Day Trip with Maasai Village costs $190 per person and lasts 13 hours. The first game drive starts on arrival in the late morning. Lunch is a picnic inside the reserve, then a second round of game viewing. A Maasai village visit is optional. The rest of the day is the road through the Great Rift Valley.

The Maasai Mara Day Tour from Nairobi by Land Cruiser runs 12 hours in a 4x4 Land Cruiser, with no drive length stated. Both exclude the park fee of $100 per person January to June and $200 July to December. Pick one only if you have a single free day between flights.

Is 2 Nights Enough for Maasai Mara?

Two nights is enough for a first look: one evening drive and one full day in the reserve.

Listings count days, and the nights are one fewer: the 3-Day Maasai Mara Group Safari in a 4WD Jeep is 3 days, 2 nights.

One Night or Two

The 2-Day Maasai Mara Group Safari in a 4WD Jeep has one game drive, on the evening of day 1. Day 2 is breakfast, checkout and the return to Nairobi. The Overnight Maasai Mara Safari from Nairobi runs game drives over its 2 days and visits the Mara River, with no timings stated.

The second night buys the full day. On the 3-day trips, day 2 runs from morning to late afternoon with a picnic lunch and, on most listings, the Mara River visit. One night suits a short Nairobi stay. The 12-hour park ticket for the evening drive ends at 6:00 pm and does not carry overnight.

What Does a 3-Day Masai Mara Safari Look Like Day by Day?

Day 1 is the drive in and an evening drive, day 2 a full day in the reserve, day 3 the drive back.

The 3-day trips share one shape. Timings come from the listings that publish them.

Day 1 to Day 3

Day 1: Nairobi to the Mara. Pickup is at your Nairobi hotel, with a photo stop at the Great Rift Valley viewpoint. You reach camp for lunch and check-in, then go out on the first drive. The 3-Day Maasai Mara Group Safari in a 4WD Jeep runs it from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, and the 3-Day Maasai Mara Safari with Private Tents from 4pm to 6:30pm.

Day 2: The Full Day. The private-tents trip drives from 7am to 4pm with a picnic lunch and a Mara River visit. The 3-Day Maasai Mara Budget Camping Safari and the 3-Day Small Group Safari at Jambo Mara Lodge also spend the whole day on game viewing.

Day 3: Back to Nairobi. Most trips offer an optional Maasai village stop on the way out, and some include lunch at a traveller's motel. No listing publishes a return time, so confirm it before booking an evening flight.

How Much Does a 3-Day Masai Mara Safari Cost?

The 3-day trips here run from $183 to $570 per person, and the park fee is $100 or $200 per adult per day by season.

The tour price and the park fee are two separate figures.

How Many Days Do You Need to See the Great Migration?

Take at least the 3-day trip and add days, since no trip length guarantees a river crossing.

Mara Conservancy describes the herds reaching the Mara Triangle around June and moving to the Mara River within days.

More Mornings, More Chances

Crossings follow the herds, not a schedule, so each extra day is one more chance at the river. On the 3-Day Maasai Mara Safari with Private Tents, the 7am to 4pm full day includes a Mara River visit. A 4-day trip adds Lake Nakuru, not river time.

The herds arrive as the higher fee starts: $200 per adult per day from 1 July to 31 December. Set your dates with the best time for a Masai Mara safari.

Should You Add Lake Nakuru or Amboseli to a Longer Safari?

Add a fourth day for Lake Nakuru, or take six days to include Amboseli.

Longer trips keep the Masai Mara core of an evening drive and a full day, then move on to Kenya Wildlife Service parks.

Four Days With Lake Nakuru

The 4-Day Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru Group Safari has a 2-hour evening drive on day 1 and a full day with a Mara River visit on day 2. Day 3 is the transfer to Nakuru. Day 4 is a 3-hour drive in Lake Nakuru National Park, then Nairobi.

Park fees are extra, with Lake Nakuru at $90 per person. The 4-Day Maasai Mara and Lake Nakuru Lodge Safari is the only trip here with park fees included.

Six Days With Amboseli

The 6-Day Small Group Safari to Mara, Nakuru and Amboseli drives on day 1 afternoon and all of day 2 in the Mara, then 3 hours at Lake Nakuru on day 4 and a full day in Amboseli on day 5. Kenya Wildlife Service charges non-resident adults $90 per day at Amboseli and Lake Nakuru. See the Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli safaris.

What Is the 12 Hour Rule for Masai Mara?

The 12-hour park ticket runs from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm whatever time you enter and does not carry overnight.

The rule is why safari fees are charged per day.

What the Ticket Covers

Mara Conservancy states that the 12-hour entry ticket applies from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, whatever the time of entry, and does not carry overnight. Enter in the afternoon and it still ends at 6:00 pm. The next morning needs a new day's fee.

Vehicle fees in the Mara Triangle are valid for 12 hours with unlimited exits and re-entries. A vehicle passing through to another destination gets 2 hours of transit before fees apply.

Where Tickets Are Sold

Tickets are sold online by KAPS with a VISA card in Nairobi, or on arrival at Purungat Bridge, Oloololo Gate or Serena Airstrip. Fees follow where you stay: staying in the Triangle and entering through Sekenani Gate, you pay at Purungat Bridge.

Is It Safe to Visit Masai Mara Now?

The official guidance covers the reserve's viewing rules, vaccines, malaria tablets and an eTA before you fly.

Safety comes down to the reserve's rules, your health preparation and your entry paperwork.

Rules Inside the Reserve

In the Mara Triangle, when more than five vehicles wait at a sighting, viewing time is limited to 10 minutes and waiting vehicles stay 100 metres back. Off-road driving is banned in a High-Use Zone, so the vehicle stays on the track.

Health and Entry

CDC recommends yellow fever vaccine for travellers aged 9 months and over going to Kenya, with exceptions, but generally not for travel limited to Nairobi city. A safari goes beyond the city. Direct travel from the United States does not require it for entry. CDC also recommends prescription malaria medicine for most of Kenya, plus hepatitis A and typhoid vaccines.

Every traveller needs their own Kenya eTA, generally processed within 72 hours.

Trip Length Questions, Answered

Is it better to go to Masai Mara or Serengeti?

The Serengeti lies across the Tanzania border from the Mara Triangle. The Masai Mara is easier from Nairobi, with day trips and 3-day safaris from hotel pickup. Compare trips on the Masai Mara safari homepage.

Is Masai Mara safe for kids, and what do children pay?

In the Mara Triangle, children aged 0 to 8 enter free and those aged 9 to 17 pay $50 per day. Pack for them with what to wear on a Masai Mara safari.

Is flying to the Masai Mara worth it on a short trip?

Flying saves road time on arrival and departure days, which matters most on a 2-day or 3-day trip. Mara Conservancy lists six airlines with daily flights to the Mara. See how to get to the Masai Mara.

Can I pay Masai Mara park fees in cash?

Not in the Mara Triangle, which takes M-Pesa or credit card only. The 3-Day Small Group Safari at Jambo Mara Lodge asks for its park fees in cash, so confirm the payment method with the operator.

Do longer safaris spend more days in the Masai Mara?

Not on the group trips here. They keep the Mara evening drive and full day, then spend extra days at Lake Nakuru and Amboseli, as on the 6-Day Small Group Safari to Mara, Nakuru and Amboseli.
