Is a Masai Mara Safari Worth It?
Is the Masai Mara safari worth it? For most first safaris, yes: the reserve is reached by road from Nairobi on every safari here, and 3-day group trips start at $183. The catch is the reserve fee, which the listed price usually leaves out: $100 per adult a day until 30 June and $200 a day from 1 July.
Quick answer The verdict in three lines
Yes for most first-time visitors: a 3-day group safari from Nairobi starts at $183, and the Great Migration fills the reserve from July to October. The catch is the reserve fee, $100 per adult per day from January to June and $200 from July, which most listings leave out. Budget for it and the Masai Mara is one of the easiest big safaris to reach.
Key takeaways
- Start with the 3-day group joining safari with a Land Cruiser, the lowest listed price on the site.
- Go from July to October for the herds, or January to June for half the fee: see the best time for a Masai Mara safari.
- Short on time? A Masai Mara day trip from Nairobi takes about 13 hours.
- Check how to get to the Masai Mara from Nairobi before choosing road or air.
Is going to Masai Mara worth it?
Yes, for a first safari it is worth it, as long as you budget for the reserve fee and accept long, dusty game drives.
The Masai Mara gives a lot of wildlife for a short trip. It also asks for patience on rough roads.
What You Get
The reserve covers about 370,000 acres in south-western Kenya. It is home to over 95 species of mammals and more than 500 bird species. Between July and October, over 1.5 million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebras cross in from the Serengeti. Wildlife viewing stays good the rest of the year too.
Access is the second reason. Every safari on this page starts with pickup in Nairobi. That is why a Masai Mara safari can fit into 3 days, or even a 13-hour day trip.
What It Takes
Game drives often last six to eight hours a day on unpaved, rough roads. Expect dust in the dry months and mud in the rains. At a popular river crossing in peak season, 50 or more vehicles can line up along the bank. Sightings are never guaranteed, even in a good month.
The money side has one trap. Most listings exclude the reserve fee, and that fee doubles on 1 July. A $183 safari is a fair price, but it is not the whole bill.

Is the Masai Mara expensive?
The safari itself starts at $183 for 3 days, but the reserve fee of $100 or $200 per adult per day usually comes on top.
Two numbers decide the cost: the tour price and the reserve fee. Read both before you book.
Tour Price Against Fee Rules
The table compares the listed price, the length of each trip and what each listing says about park fees. Prices are per person as listed, and the fee line is quoted from the listing itself.
| Safari | Listed price | Length | Park fees on the listing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-day group joining safari with a Land Cruiser | $183 | 3 days | Excluded unless the option with fees is booked |
| 3-day group safari in a 4WD Jeep | $199 | 3 days | Excluded for 2 nights unless the option with fees is booked |
| 3-day safari with private tents | $228 | 3 days | $200 January to June, $400 July to December |
| 3-day budget camping safari | $238 | 3 days | $100 per day January to June, $200 per day later |
| 3-day small group safari at Jambo Mara Lodge | $570 | 3 days | $200 January to June, $400 July to December, in cash |
| Day trip with a Maasai village visit | $190 | 13 hours | $100 January to June, $200 July to December |
How the Reserve Fee Works
Mara Conservancy charges non-resident adults $100 per person per day from 1 January to 30 June and $200 from 1 July to 31 December in the Mara Triangle. Children aged 9 to 17 pay a lower child rate, and children aged 0 to 8 enter free.
The Triangle does not take cash for park fees, only M-Pesa and credit card. Ask your operator who pays at the gate and how. Some listings sell an option with fees included, which is the simplest way to avoid surprises.

What is the 12 hour rule for Masai Mara?
A Mara Triangle entry ticket covers one 12-hour window from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm, whatever time you enter, and it does not carry over the night.
The rule changes how a day is planned and how fees add up on a multi-day trip.
What It Means on Safari
Each ticket runs from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. Enter at 3:00 pm and the ticket still ends at 6:00 pm. A second day needs a second ticket. That is why fees are quoted per day, and why a 3-day safari usually pays for each day spent inside.
Vehicle fees follow the same 12-hour window, with unlimited exits and re-entries. A vehicle passing through to somewhere else gets two hours of transit before fees apply.
Where You Pay
In the Mara Triangle, fees follow where you stay. A guest staying in the Triangle who drives in through Sekenani Gate pays only on reaching Purungat Bridge. Tickets are also sold by KAPS online or at Purungat Bridge, Oloololo Gate and Serena Airstrip.
A Masai Mara safari with a driver-guide usually handles this for you, so confirm it in writing.

How much time does a Masai Mara safari need?
Three days is the sweet spot, a 13-hour day trip is possible, and longer trips add Lake Nakuru and Amboseli.
Time is the hidden cost. Driving from Nairobi eats part of the first and last day.
Day Trip, 3 Days or Longer
The day trip with a Maasai village visit lasts 13 hours for $190. Most of that day goes on the road. Flights from Wilson Airport to Mara airstrips save road time, as the guide to getting there explains. A 3-day trip gives two nights near the reserve and full game drives in between. The 3-day group joining safari at $183 and the 3-day 4WD Jeep safari at $199 are the two lowest listed prices.
With more days, add parks. Read about Masai Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli safaris for 4-day and 6-day routes.

Check AvailabilityWho will love a Masai Mara safari, and who should skip it?
First-time safari travellers and migration watchers get the most from it, while tight budgets and travellers who hate long drives may do better elsewhere.
The reserve suits some travellers far better than others.
Who Will Love It
A first safari works well here because the logistics are simple. Operators pick up in Nairobi, drive to the reserve and run game drives in a Land Cruiser or 4WD jeep. Pack for dust and cool mornings with the what to wear on a Masai Mara safari list.
- First safaris: 3-day trips from $183 leave from Nairobi.
- Migration fans: the herds cross from July to October.
- Bird watchers: more than 500 bird species are recorded.
- Families: children aged 0 to 8 enter the Mara Triangle free.
Who Should Skip It, and What to Do Instead
Travellers on the tightest budgets may find the fee too steep, especially from July. A cheaper safari in Kruger or a Namibia self-drive can deliver wildlife without that premium. Anyone who cannot sit six to eight hours a day on rough roads should pick a lodge stay with shorter drives, or a balloon flight over the plains.

Is it better to go to Masai Mara or Serengeti?
They are one ecosystem, and the Masai Mara is the easier pick from Nairobi, with the herds crossing into it from July to October.
The two parks share the same wildlife. The choice is about access and timing.
One Ecosystem, Two Countries
The Mara is the northern-most part of the Mara-Serengeti ecosystem. The wildebeest cross from the Serengeti into the Mara between July and October. The Mara Triangle has no fences on its Tanzania border, so the animals move freely.
How to Decide
Pick the Mara for a short trip that starts in Nairobi, a fixed budget and 3 days. Look at the Serengeti if you are already travelling in Tanzania. Many travellers who start in Kenya combine the Mara with Lake Nakuru and Amboseli instead of crossing the border.
Is Masai Mara worth visiting in December, January or March?
January is a strong value month, December brings short rains, and March starts the long rains, so each month trades weather against price.
Wildlife viewing is good year-round. The month mostly changes the weather and the fee.
Month Trade-Offs
The Kenya Meteorological Department reports two rainy seasons: the long rains from March to May and the short rains from October to December. The reserve fee is $100 per adult per day from January to June and $200 from July to December.
January falls in the cheaper fee period and outside both rainy seasons. December sits in the short rains and in the higher fee period. March brings the start of the long rains and the lower fee. The best time for a Masai Mara safari goes month by month.

How do you get the most from a Masai Mara safari?
Fix the fee question before you pay, choose your area with the conservancy rule in mind, and give yourself at least 3 days.
A few choices made before booking change the whole trip.
Before You Book
These checks prevent the most common surprises at the gate.
- Ask whether the price includes the reserve fee, and book the option with fees if it exists.
- Check the payment method: the Mara Triangle takes only M-Pesa and credit card.
- Carry a passport: a driving licence is not accepted for resident rates.
- Pick free cancellation: the 3-day listings offer it up to 24 hours ahead.
Reserve or Conservancy
Guests staying in a private conservancy can drive into the reserve, but guests staying in the reserve cannot enter the conservancies. A conservancy stay therefore opens two areas to explore.
At busy sightings, patience pays. In the Mara Triangle, when more than five vehicles wait at a sighting, viewing time is limited to ten minutes, and waiting vehicles hold back. Going early in the 6:00 am window gives the quietest light.
