Masai Mara Safari vs Serengeti Safari: Which Is Better?

On Masai Mara safari vs Serengeti safari, the Masai Mara suits a short trip from Nairobi, with 3-day group safaris from $183, while the Serengeti suits a longer itinerary that starts in Tanzania. Both sit in one unfenced ecosystem, and Mara Conservancy says the migration herds reach the Mara Triangle around June.

Quick answer Which side suits which trip

Choose the Masai Mara for a safari of 1 to 6 days from Nairobi, with listed prices from $183 and a reserve fee of $100 to $200 per adult per day on top of most listings. Choose the Serengeti only if your trip already runs through Tanzania, since no safari on this site crosses the border. Mara Conservancy says the herds reach the Mara Triangle around June.

Key takeaways

Is it better to go to Masai Mara or Serengeti?

For a safari that starts in Nairobi the Masai Mara is the better choice, and the Serengeti makes sense as part of a longer trip in Tanzania.

Both names cover one ecosystem split by the Kenya and Tanzania border. What differs is the country, the start city and what you can actually book.

Head to Head

The table sets the Kenyan side against the Tanzanian side on the points that change a booking. Mara figures come from Mara Conservancy, the Kenya eTA site and the safari listings on this site.

Why the Mara Wins for a Nairobi Trip

A group joining safari leaves Nairobi, spends two nights near the reserve and returns on day 3. The 3 Days 2 Nights Maasai Mara Group Safari in a 4WD Jeep at $199 has a sunset game drive from 4:00 to 6:00 PM on day 1 and a full-day drive on day 2. Wildlife sits close together on the smaller Kenyan side, so sightings come quickly.

The far larger Serengeti, with its calving grounds, rewards a longer stay that begins in Tanzania.

Are the Masai Mara and the Serengeti the same park?

No, they are two protected areas in two countries, but they form one unfenced ecosystem that the migration herds cross.

The border is a line on the map, not a barrier on the ground. That is why the same herds appear in both countries in different months.

The Border Has No Fence

The Mara Triangle, the western part of the reserve run by Mara Conservancy, is bounded by the Mara River, the top contour of the Oloololo escarpment and the Tanzania border. None of those lines is fenced, and the Serengeti carries on south of the border. Mara Conservancy's fee table for the Triangle is $100 per adult per day from 1 January to 30 June and $200 from 1 July to 31 December, the same rate the safari listings quote.

How Many Animals Move

Mara Conservancy puts the migration at 1,245,000 wildebeest, 200,000 Burchell's zebra, 18,000 eland and 500,000 Thomson's gazelle. These are the same herds on both sides of the border. The month you travel decides more than the country does.

When is the Great Migration in the Masai Mara vs the Serengeti?

Mara Conservancy describes the herds reaching the Mara Triangle around June, while calving and the earlier months of the year belong to the Tanzanian side.

The fee season, the rains and the herds run on three different calendars. Line them up before you pay for a date.

The Year on the Kenyan Side

This table lines up the reserve fee season, Kenya's two rainy seasons and the herd arrival for each part of the year. Fees come from Mara Conservancy, rain from the Kenya Meteorological Department.

MonthsMara fee, adult per dayRain in KenyaHerds in the Mara
January to February$100Between the rainy seasonsNot yet arrived, calving is on the Tanzanian side
March to May$100Long rainsNot yet arrived
June$100Between the rainy seasonsReach the Mara Triangle by the Sand River
July to September$200Between the rainy seasonsNo departure date published
October to December$200Short rainsNo departure date published

Arrival Is Published, Departure Is Not

Mara Conservancy publishes when the herds arrive, not when they leave. After reaching the Sand River around June, they move on to the Mara River within days. Ask the operator for a current herd report before you pay for a July to December date, when the adult fee is $200 a day.

Masai Mara vs Serengeti in December

December falls in the short rains, which the Kenya Meteorological Department dates from October to December, and the Mara fee is still $200 per adult per day. Mara Conservancy gives no herd date for December, so get a fresh report from the operator before booking it for the herds. Calving happens on the Tanzanian side early in the year.

What does a Masai Mara safari from Nairobi include?

Listings on this site run from a 13-hour day trip to 6-day circuits that leave Nairobi by road, and most put the reserve fee on top of the listed price.

This is the side you can book here. The price on a listing is rarely the whole bill, so read the fee column first.

Mara Trips by Length

These are Mara trips listed on this site, by length, with the listed price per person and whether the reserve fee is in that price. Prices come from the listings, fees from Mara Conservancy.

Getting There and Getting In

Most of these trips go by road from Nairobi in a 4x4 Land Cruiser with a pop-up roof. For a fly-in stay, Mara Conservancy lists six airlines with daily scheduled flights to the Mara, among them Air Kenya and Safarilink. The guide on how to get to the Masai Mara compares road and air.

What does a Serengeti safari involve?

A Serengeti safari is a Tanzania trip, usually reached through Kilimanjaro International Airport, and none of the safaris on this site go there.

The Tanzanian side is the same ecosystem but a different journey. Plan it as its own trip, not as a detour from Nairobi.

What Changes If You Go South

Most travellers reach the Serengeti through Kilimanjaro International Airport, then continue by road transfer or charter flight. That makes it a different trip from a Nairobi departure, with Tanzania's park fees and entry rules in place of Kenya's. This site does not quote Serengeti fees.

The park is far larger than the Masai Mara and holds the calving grounds. Combined Serengeti and Masai Mara trips are sold as private packages by specialist operators, not as group joining safaris.

Kenya Paperwork Still Applies If You Cross

Every traveller needs their own Kenya eTA, from $30 with normal processing. Apply only on etakenya.go.ke or the official app, and allow three business days or 72 hours. A Serengeti leg adds Tanzania's own entry process on top.

What is the 12 hour rule for Masai Mara?

Mara Conservancy sells a 12-hour ticket valid from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm whatever time you enter, and it does not carry overnight.

This rule decides how many fee days a Mara safari costs. It is the first number to check on any Kenyan listing.

How the Ticket Works

The ticket covers the daylight window only. Enter in the afternoon and it still ends at 6:00 pm. A night in camp does not stretch it into the next morning, so every day in the reserve is a new ticket. Vehicle fees are also valid for 12 hours, with unlimited exits and re-entries in the Mara Triangle.

Buy tickets online from KAPS with a VISA card in Nairobi, or on arrival at Purungat Bridge, Oloololo Gate or Serena Airstrip. The Mara Triangle takes no cash, only M-Pesa or card.

What It Means for Your Booking

On a day trip such as the Day Tour to Maasai Mara Reserve at $225, one ticket covers the game drive, at $100 or $200 per adult depending on the season. On a 3-day safari, the listing tells you how many fee days to expect. The 3 Days 2 Nights Maasai Mara Group Safari in a 4WD Jeep excludes park fees for 2 nights unless you book its option with fees.

Which park has more crowded game drives?

Only the Mara side publishes crowd rules, and in the Mara Triangle a sighting with more than five vehicles waiting is limited to 10 minutes of viewing.

Crowding is the most common worry on the Kenyan side. The Mara Triangle answers it with written rules you can hold your driver to.

Rules at a Mara Sighting

When more than five vehicles wait at a sighting in the Mara Triangle, viewing time is limited to 10 minutes and waiting vehicles stay 100 metres back. Off-road driving is banned in High-Use Zones. In Low-Use Zones you may approach cats to within 25 metres.

Wildlife sits close together on the compact Kenyan side, so sightings come fast and you share the best ones. The Serengeti spreads its vehicles over a much larger area. For a less crowded roof hatch, pick a capped vehicle: the 3-Day Maasai Mara Safari with 4WD Land Cruiser carries a maximum of 8.

Which should you choose, Masai Mara or Serengeti?

Pick by where your trip starts and how long it is: a Nairobi start and up to 6 days points to the Mara, a Tanzania itinerary points to the Serengeti.

Most readers of this page land in Nairobi. For them the question is which Mara trip, and the Serengeti is the answer only when Tanzania is already on the route.

Masai Mara vs Serengeti FAQ

What is considered the best safari in Africa?

There is no official ranking. What sets the Masai Mara and the Serengeti apart is the Great Migration, which Mara Conservancy counts at 1,245,000 wildebeest. From Nairobi, a Masai Mara safari is the quickest way to see it.

Which safari park is considered the best in the world?

No park holds an official title. For a traveller based in Nairobi, the Masai Mara gives the most wildlife for the time: a day trip from Nairobi runs 12 to 13 hours on one reserve ticket.

Can you combine the Masai Mara and the Serengeti in one trip?

Yes, as a private package from a specialist operator, with two countries' entry rules. No safari on this site crosses the border. The longest Kenya option here is the 6-day Mara, Lake Nakuru and Amboseli safari at $580.

Is the Masai Mara in Tanzania?

No. The Masai Mara is in Kenya's Narok County, and the Serengeti is its Tanzanian neighbour across an unfenced border. See how to get to the Masai Mara from Nairobi.

Do children pay the Masai Mara fee?

Children aged 0 to 8 enter the Mara Triangle free, and ages 9 to 17 pay $50 a day in both seasons. The 3-day group joining safari takes children from age 3.

Is December better in the Masai Mara or the Serengeti?

December is in Kenya's short rains, October to December, and the Mara fee is $200 per adult per day. Mara Conservancy publishes no herd date for it, so read the best time for a Masai Mara safari before booking.
