Where to Stay on a Masai Mara Safari
Where to stay for Masai Mara safari trips from Nairobi depends on how you travel: on a group safari from $183 per person the camp comes with the package, usually a tented camp beside the reserve such as Rhino Tourist Camp. Book a hotel in the Nairobi city centre or Westlands for the night before, because that is where free pickups run.
Quick answer Short answer: camp, lodge and the night in Nairobi
Most travellers sleep where their package puts them: 2 nights in a tented camp by the reserve on 3-day group safaris from $183 per person. Lodge packages such as Jambo Mara Lodge start at $570. Spend the night before in the Nairobi city centre or Westlands, inside the free pickup zone.
Key takeaways
- Cheapest camp-included trip: the 3-day group joining safari with a Land Cruiser at $183 per person, with a choice of camps.
- Lodge instead of tent: the 3-day small group safari at Jambo Mara Lodge at $570 per person, full board.
- Adding Lake Nakuru? See where the Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru safaris sleep each night.
- Plan the road from Nairobi with how to get to the Masai Mara.
What is the best place to stay in the Masai Mara National Reserve?
For a road safari from Nairobi the best base is a tented camp just outside a reserve gate, and for a balloon flight it is a camp inside the Mara, where the pickup starts.
The Masai Mara has three kinds of base: the reserve itself, the private conservancies that border it, and the camps and villages outside the gates. Your safari package usually decides which one you get.
The Areas at a Glance
The table sets the main bases against the traveller each one suits and the camps the bookable safaris on this site name. Camp names come from the tour listings, fee rules from Mara Conservancy.
| Base | Suits | Camps named on tours | Fee note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nairobi city centre or Westlands | Everyone, the night before pickup | Your own hotel | No park fee |
| Budget camps by the reserve | Group safaris on a budget | Rhino Tourist Camp, Lenchada, Enchoro, Mara Ntulele | Park fee per day, paid at the gate |
| Lodges by the reserve | Couples and families who want rooms | Jambo Mara Lodge, Enkorok Mara Camp, Mara Sopa Lodge | Park fee per day, paid at the gate |
| Mara Triangle | Travellers who want the western river side | Ask the operator | Fees paid by where you stay |
| Conservancies | Fewer vehicles, private bookings | Booked through the camp | Set by each conservancy |
Reading the Choice
If you book a 3-day group safari, you are not choosing a camp from a list of dozens. You choose the package, and the package names the camp or offers two or three tiers. That makes the tier the real decision: tent or lodge, shared or private.
The Mara is also split by management. The western Mara Triangle is run by Mara Conservancy, and its fees depend on where you sleep. Eleven named conservancies, such as Mara Naboisho and Olare Motorogi, sit outside the reserve boundary and run their own rules. For a first Masai Mara safari on a budget, a camp near the reserve gate is the simple answer.

Is it better to stay inside Masai Mara or outside?
Stay inside if you want to be at the sightings from first light and plan a balloon flight, and stay just outside if price matters most, since group safari camps there come inside packages from $183.
The trade-off is time against money, and the 12-hour fee rule is what links the two.
Inside the Reserve or the Triangle
A camp inside the Mara puts the game drive at your tent flap. Balloon operators collect guests from their Mara lodge or camp in the dark, so an inside base suits anyone booking a hot air balloon safari. Staying in the Mara Triangle also changes where you pay: if you stay in the Triangle and drive in through Sekenani Gate, you pay the Triangle fee only when you reach Purungat Bridge.
Just Outside a Gate
Most budget group safaris use tented camps on the edge of the reserve. You drive in each morning and out each evening. The fee is charged per day, so the number of days in the park matters more than the number of nights in camp. The 3-day Maasai Mara group safari in a 4WD jeep at $199 sleeps 2 nights at Rhino Tourist Camp or similar in this way.
When more than five vehicles wait at a sighting in the Mara Triangle, viewing time is limited to 10 minutes and waiting vehicles stay 100 metres back. Busy months feel busier from any base, so the month you pick matters as much as the camp. See the best time for a Masai Mara safari.

What is the 12 hour rule for Masai Mara?
A Mara Triangle entry ticket is valid for one 12-hour day from 06:00 to 18:00, whatever time you enter, and it does not carry overnight.
The rule matters for where you stay, because it decides how much each day's fee buys you.
How It Plays Out by Base
Mara Conservancy sells the Triangle entry ticket for 06:00 to 18:00. Arrive at 14:00 and you still pay a full day. Vehicle fees are valid for 12 hours with unlimited exits and re-entries, so a camp outside the gate can bring you back for lunch without a second vehicle ticket on the same day.
The ticket does not carry overnight, so every day in the park is a new fee. The reserve fee for non-resident adults is $100 per person per day from 1 January to 30 June and $200 from 1 July to 31 December. A camp inside the Mara does not avoid the daily fee, it only saves the drive to the gate.

Which budget camps do Masai Mara group safaris use?
Budget group safaris name Rhino Tourist Camp, Lenchada, Enchoro, Mara Ntulele and Sankale Mara Camp, all tented camps with private bathrooms.
Budget does not mean a shared tent. The listings describe private, self-contained tents with a bed, a bathroom and hot water.
What Each Package Names
The table shows which camp each 3-day group safari names and its price per person. Camp details and prices come from the tour listings, which add "or similar" when the camp is full.
| Safari | Price per person | Camp named | Room |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3-day group joining safari with a Land Cruiser | $183 | Rhino Tourist Camp, Mara Ntulele Camp or Jambo Mara Lodge, by option | Private bathroom, hot shower, WiFi |
| 3-day Maasai Mara group safari in a 4WD jeep | $199 | Rhino Tourist Camp or similar | Self-contained tent, evening electricity |
| 3-day Maasai Mara safari with a 4WD Land Cruiser | $228 | Private tents, lodge upgrade option | Bathroom, hot shower, wall sockets |
| 3-day Maasai Mara group safari by 4WD | $238 | Rhino Tourist Camp or similar | Budget tent, upgrade on request |
What a Budget Tent Is Like
The $199 package describes a big private tent with a bed, linen, shower, toilet, mosquito nets, hot water and electricity in the evening. The $183 package says its camps have WiFi, nets, hot showers and private bathrooms. Travellers on the $238 safari have also been placed at Sankale Mara Camp under the "or similar" clause.
On shorter trips the same names repeat. The overnight Maasai Mara safari uses Rhino, Lenchada or Enchoro on its group option. Charge phones while the power is on and pack a head torch, because power is often on a schedule.

Check AvailabilityWhich lodges do mid-range Masai Mara safaris use?
Mid-range packages use Jambo Mara Lodge, Mara Jambo, Enkorok Mara Camp and, on the superior tier, Mara Sopa Lodge.
A lodge gives you a solid room and a dining room in place of a tent, and it costs more than a camp package.
Lodge Packages on This Site
The 3-day small group safari at Jambo Mara Lodge costs $570 per person, with 2 nights at Jambo Mara Lodge or similar on full board and hotel pickup in Nairobi. Its park fee is extra: $100 per adult per day from 1 January to 30 June and $200 from 1 July.
The $183 group joining safari offers a midrange tier at Jambo Mara Lodge, moving guests to Enkorok or Simba Oryx Lodge if it is full. On a 4-day trip, the Masai Mara and Lake Nakuru safaris offer Enkorok Mara Camp or Mara Jambo on the standard tier and Mara Sopa Lodge on the superior tier, followed by Flamingo Hill Camp or Lake Nakuru Lodge at Nakuru.
Couples and Families
Couples who want a quiet room do better on a small group lodge package than on a large group camp. Families should ask for a family tent or connecting rooms when they book, since some Mara camps offer family-size tents with extra beds. Children aged 9 to 17 pay $50 a day in the Mara Triangle and children under 9 enter free, which makes a lodge night the bigger cost for a family than the fee.

Where should you stay in Nairobi before a Masai Mara safari?
Stay in the Nairobi city centre or Westlands, because that is where the free hotel pickups run on the 3-day group safaris.
Almost every Masai Mara safari on this site starts in Nairobi early in the morning, so the night before is part of the plan.
Pickup Zones
The $199 and $228 safaris offer free hotel pickup and drop-off within the Nairobi CBD and Westlands, near the highway. If you sleep outside that area, you meet the vehicle outside the City Market on Muindi Mbingu Street. The $228 safari collects between 07:00 and 08:00 depending on your hotel. The $238 safari picks up from hotels in the city centre or Westlands, and drop-off outside that zone costs extra.
Day trips are more flexible. The Maasai Mara day trip with a Maasai village at $190 collects from your hotel or residence anywhere in Nairobi.
Before You Arrive
Book the Nairobi hotel only after the safari confirms its pickup zone. Every traveller needs a Kenya eTA before arrival, and the application asks for accommodation details, so have the hotel booking ready. If your flight lands the same morning, ask whether the operator collects from the airport on day 1.

Where should you stay for a hot air balloon safari in the Masai Mara?
Stay inside or right beside the Mara, because balloon pickups start from Mara lodges and camps before dawn, not from Nairobi.
A balloon flight is the one Masai Mara activity where the base decides whether you can book at all.
Pickup Areas
The hot air balloon safari with champagne breakfast collects guests from their lodge or camp in the dark, with a wake-up call. Its listed pickup areas are Ololaimutiek Village, Keekorok and Sekenani in Narok County. Lodges in the far west, such as Mara West Camp, Mara Serena Safari Lodge and Neptune Mara Rianta Luxury Camp, have their own pickup.
Tell the safari operator before you book the balloon, so the morning game drive is planned around the flight. The Mara Conservancy flying guide lists six airlines with daily scheduled flights to the Mara, if you prefer to fly in and skip the road.

How do park fees change with where you stay?
The daily fee is the same per non-resident adult wherever you sleep, but the Mara Triangle charges by where you stay, and only some packages include the fee.
Check two things before you compare package prices: whether the fee is in the price, and how you will pay it.
Fees and Packages
Mara Conservancy lists $100 per non-resident adult per day from 1 January to 30 June and $200 from 1 July to 31 December. Children aged 9 to 17 pay $50 and children under 9 enter free. In the Triangle the fee is paid by M-Pesa or credit card, never cash.
The $183 and $199 safaris offer an option with park fees included, and their basic option leaves the fee to you. The $228, $238 and $570 safaris exclude the fee. The rains also shape the stay: the Kenya Meteorological Department reports long rains from March to May and short rains from October to December, when camp tracks turn muddy.
